Sounds like: Harsh, crunchy, broken-sounding digital fuzz, like a corrupted file.
A harsh, aliased, digitally-degraded texture — deliberately embracing bit-crush and sample-rate-reduction artifacts rather than avoiding them, for a broken, low-resolution digital character.
Open this patch in the interactive PatchpadALGO 8 with MIX -64 selects the X output (Operator A modulating Operator C, plus B2 as a plain carrier) for a bright, edgy carrier that survives heavy bit-reduction. FX page's BR and SRR are Digitone II's genuinely idiomatic bit-reduction and sample-rate-reduction sends, pushed hard here (higher values = more aggressive reduction) -- exactly the mechanism this patch's brief calls for, no approximation needed on this synth.
SY BITS has real sample-rate reduction (SRR) and bit reduction (BR, 16 down to 2 bits), so this is genuine bit-crush. BAL 80 blends both oscillators with a little noise, and OVER adds grit. SRR and BR are raised well above centre; the manual gives the range but not the direction of the knob, so if it gets cleaner instead of crunchier, reverse the setting.
Summit has no literal bit-crusher, so FILTER's own pre-filter OVERDRIVE combined with the EFFECTS section's Distortion send are the closest real onboard substitutes, both pushed hard -- the result reads as heavily overdriven rather than genuinely aliased/bit-reduced.
Osc 1 is BasicWaves with Morph at 50 (pure sawtooth): the Morph knob runs from a square (0) through a sawtooth (50) to a double sawtooth an octave up (100), Sym only changes the pulse width below 50, and Sub adds a sine an octave down (0 here). Pushed fully wet here for a fully committed, broken low-resolution character. Values are on MiniFreak's native 0-100 scale.
FX1's shared distortion slot genuinely includes a Bit Crusher submode on Typhon (GAIN becomes sample-rate and LVL becomes bit-depth in that mode) -- a real onboard mechanism. FILTER ADSR/AMP ADSR use the real 0-100 screen scale, not clock-position language -- only the 8 FRONT PANEL knobs are physically unmarked.
OSC1's own BITREDUX is a genuine oscillator-level bit-depth reduction, the most direct real mechanism here, pushed down to 6-bit. POST-FX's Lo-Fi type adds sample-rate reduction on top (SAMPLING runs 44,100 down to 2,756 Hz), fully wet.
Real bit-crush / sample-rate reduction on Digitone II (FX page BR and SRR), Syntakt (SY BITS SRR and BR), MiniFreak (Bit Crusher), Typhon (FX1 Bit Crusher mode) and Hydrasynth (BITREDUX and Lo-Fi); Summit substitutes heavy distortion, which reads as gritty rather than digitally broken.
