Detuned Unison Pad

Sounds like: A thick, swirling pad that beats and chorus-shimmers with no effects.

Sound type: pad · Genre: House, Minimal House · Style: thick, chorused pad built purely from unison detune

A thick, chorused pad where unison detune alone does all the work — no chorus effect, no filter movement, just several closely-tuned voices creating natural width and beating.

Digitone II's ALGO 3 gives three plain carriers (C, B2, B1) when the FM depth of A and B is off, so LEV (A) and LEV (B) are both 0. MIX -64 selects the X tap (C + B2), and DTUN, which offsets only the ratio of operators A and B2, detunes B2 against C so the two beat against each other. DTUN below 64 is a very slight detune; above 64 is heavier. No FX page here -- per the brief, the detune itself carries the width, not a chorus or reverb send.

SYN — SY SWARM

FLTR PAGE 1

AMP PAGE 1

AMP PAGE 2

SY SWARM's own DET/MIX pair is Syntakt's built-in unison-style detune -- six internally detuned oscillators over a fundamental -- so it does the width job without leaning on a chorus effect, matching the brief. ANIM is left at 0 so the detune amount stays fixed rather than animating over time, since this patch wants steady beating, not movement. AMP PAGE 2's MODE must be set to ADSR (the default for SY machines, but drum machines default to AHD), or SUS/REL on AMP PAGE 1 are ignored and the pad can't sustain.

AMP ENVELOPE

Summit's real detune-for-width mechanism is two-fold: DIVERGE (menu-only, per-voice detune spread) on OSCILLATOR 1, plus running all three real oscillators a few cents apart via FINE rather than stacking identical waveforms -- both genuine hardware controls, not an approximation. ENV DEPTH is left at 0 on FILTER so the cutoff stays put; no chorus or other EFFECTS entries are used, matching the brief that detune alone should carry the width.

ANALOG FILTER

ENVELOPE

Osc 1 is SuperWave, the stacked-detuned-copies engine: Detune (30) sets the spread between the copies and the third knob (60) sets the copies' level against the original. ENV/VELO stays at its center-detent (0) so the filter never moves, matching the no-processing brief. Values are on MiniFreak's native 0-100 scale.

Dreadbox Typhon

Approximation: Only two VCOs: no multi-voice unison

FRONT PANEL

AMP ADSR

Typhon's only real unison-style control is TUNE 2 detuning VCO2 against VCO1 -- there's no per-voice unison feature, so 'several closely-tuned voices' translates to just the two VCOs here, kept close rather than a wide stack. EG LEVEL is turned fully down so the Filter ADSR has no effect on CUTOFF at all, keeping the filter static per the brief -- FILTER ADSR itself is left off this page since its values wouldn't matter with EG LEVEL at zero. No FX2/FX3 pages are used -- no chorus, no reverb, the detune alone carries the width.

ENVELOPE 2

All three real oscillators run the same waveform a few CENTS apart -- Hydrasynth's genuine unison-style width mechanism, since its Unison voice modes are monophonic and a pad needs polyphony -- rather than one oscillator plus a Pre-FX Chorus. ENV 1 AMOUNT and LFO 1 AMOUNT are both left at 0 on FILTER 1 so cutoff never moves. No PRE-FX/POST-FX/DELAY/REVERB pages are used, matching the no-chorus, detune-only brief.

How the synths compare

Deliberately effects-free — this patch is a study in how far pure oscillator detune can carry a 'wide' pad sound without any processing.
