FM Bell Lead

Sounds like: A bright, ringing bell lead that sustains long enough to play a melody.

Sound type: lead · Genre: House, Trip-Hop · Style: bright, melodic FM bell lead tone

A bright, ringing bell-like lead with more sustain and melodic focus than Classic FM Pluck — sits comfortably as a played lead line rather than a short percussive accent.

ALGO 8 with MIX at -64 selects the X output (Operator A modulating Operator C, plus B2 as a plain carrier), the standard carrier+modulator FM pairing -- RATIO A at 2.50 (a non-integer ratio) plus its own longer DEC/END on SYN page 2 gives a bell-like inharmonic ring rather than a plain buzzy tone. Gentler ratio and longer decay than Classic FM Pluck for a more melodic, sustained bell.

SYN — SY TONE

AMP PAGE 2

Syntakt's SY TONE machine is a two-operator FM voice (RATIO, FDBK, MOD, MENV), so FM is available on the melodic tracks. RATIO 50 and moderate MOD give the bright, ringing bell; longer DEC and MENV let the shimmer sustain. RATIO is by ear.

EFFECTS

Summit has real FM: the panel FM section's Osc 1 > Osc 2 control sets how much Oscillator 1 frequency-modulates Oscillator 2's pitch, and its Source button picks Manual, Mod Env 2 or LFO 2 (the sources add together). Osc 1 is the modulator (its Mixer level is 0) and Osc 2 is the carrier; the Osc 1 : Osc 2 pitch ratio (set with Range and Coarse) decides whether the sidebands are harmonic or bell-like. A ratio of about 3.4:1 gives the bell inharmonics; Mod Env 2 with a moderate sustain keeps some FM colour through the held note.

DIGITAL EFFECTS · FX1

Osc 1 is Modal, a physical model of a struck object: Wave is Inharm (woody to metallic), Timbre is the exciter brightness and Shape is the decay. 0-100 scale throughout. Values are on MiniFreak's native 0-100 scale.

FRONT PANEL

AMP ADSR

FX3

AMP ADSR's real 0-100 sliders carry the soft-attack, sustained-body shape this bell wants -- the FRONT PANEL's EG LEVEL knob stays a light, unmarked touch on the filter, not the main envelope shaping tool. Typhon does have real onboard reverb (FX3) -- Soft Reverb at a light mix gives gentle ambience without a dedicated delay send. VCO1's SHAPE knob position gives a narrower, brighter waveform blend for the ringing edge; expect a warmer, less bell-like result than the FM-capable synths overall. M1/M2/M3 are left unused.

REVERB

Mutator 1's Harmonic mode isolates and boosts a single upper harmonic (Ratio 6.000) on a plain Triangle oscillator, the same real mechanism used for bell/metallic character on Glassy Digital Pad -- a more literal translation than a plain ring-mod/FM guess. Filter 1 stays a nearly-open, gentle LP 1 Pole so it doesn't interfere with the harmonic content Mutator 1 is shaping. Reverb is a genuine always-on module here, separate from Pre-FX/Post-FX.

How the synths compare

A melodic sibling of Classic FM Pluck — same FM approach, longer envelope and less aggressive modulator level for sustained playability.
