Granular Texture Pad
Sounds like: A grainy, fluttering pad that sounds slightly broken into pieces.
Sound type: pad · Genre: IDM, Experimental · Style: grainy, fragmented, granular-adjacent pad texture
A fragmented, slightly unstable pad texture that suggests granular synthesis without needing a true granular engine — built from a fast, subtle amplitude flutter layered onto a sustained tone.

ALGO 8 with MIX at -64 selects the X output (Operator A modulating Operator C, plus B2 as a plain carrier) for the core tone. The fragmented flutter comes from a MOD page LFO set to Random (Digitone II's real name for its per-track LFOs — there's no true mod matrix on this device) routed to Operator A's own level, so the brightness itself flickers rather than the raw amplitude — a genuinely different mechanism from true granular synthesis, but a related fragmented effect.

Syntakt's melodic tracks use Digital machines, not Analog (analog machines only live on the drum/cymbal tracks) — SY RAW's plain dual-oscillator waveforms give a simple base tone so the flutter, not the source, carries the fragmented character. AMP PAGE 2's MODE must be ADSR (the default for SY machines, but check it), otherwise the AMP PAGE 1 sustain is ignored and the pad can't hold. LFO PAGE 1's Random wave targeting VOL is the closest real equivalent to a sample & hold flutter.

LFO 1/2 are hardwired to filter frequency and oscillator pitch via their own section's Depth knobs, so reaching amplitude specifically means using one of the global LFO 3/4 slots through the Mod Matrix instead — LFO 3 set to a fast Random/S&H-style waveform and routed to Amp Level in Slot 1 gives the flutter.

Osc 1 is BasicWaves with Morph at 50 (pure sawtooth): the Morph knob runs from a square (0) through a sawtooth (50) to a double sawtooth an octave up (100), Sym only changes the pulse width below 50, and Sub adds a sine an octave down (0 here). LFO 2 runs a SnH wave at 10 Hz. Mod Matrix: the LFO 2 row to the Assign 1: VCA column (hold an Assign button and turn that control to assign it) at +40. Values are on MiniFreak's native 0-100 scale, not 0-127.

Typhon has no true sample & hold LFO shape — M1's Chaos Saw is the closest available approximation to a fast, irregular flutter, routed to DEST VCA for amplitude. Front-panel knobs are physically unmarked, so those values are clock positions, not percentages. Typhon does have real onboard effects (unlike a plain unmarked-knobs synth) — FX3's Soft Reverb adds a little space without fighting the flutter for attention.

LFO 2 is pre-wired to the Amp module, so a fast S&H-wave LFO 2 routed at moderate depth through AMP's own LFO 2 AMOUNT knob gives the flutter directly — no Mod Matrix routing needed for this particular connection.
Compared with other synths: Hydrasynth's ENVELOPE 2 (also pre-wired to Amp) times are real ms/seconds, unlike the raw 0-127/0-100 scales used elsewhere in this library.
How the synths compare
None of these synths have true granular synthesis — this patch approximates the fragmented character with a fast sample & hold modulator, a genuinely different (simpler) mechanism producing a related effect.
