Ring-Mod Alien FX
Sounds like: A wobbling, robotic 'alien communicator' sweep.
Sound type: fx · Genre: Experimental, IDM · Style: classic sci-fi ring-modulation robot/alien voice FX
A wobbling, inharmonic sweep FX built from ring modulation with a moving interval — the classic 'alien communicator' sound, where a slow pitch or ratio sweep constantly reshapes the sideband spacing while the sound rings out.

Real WAVETONE RING MOD again, with MOD page 1's LFO continuously sweeping TUN2 — the modulator's tuning, which per the manual is what 'changes the sound' in ring-mod mode — so the sideband spacing constantly shifts, the classic wobbling alien-communicator movement. TUN1 stays put to hold the pitch. LEV2 is 0 so only the ring-modulated signal is heard.

Real, literal ring modulation via SY RAW's WAV2 ring-modulator waveform, with LFO PAGE 1 slowly modulating the machine's TUNE knob (parameter 1 — Syntakt has no direct pitch LFO destination) so the sideband spacing keeps shifting, the wobbling alien-communicator movement.

Macros
- M1: OSC 2 TUNE/OCT — Macros M1/M2 touch strip, live interval sweep
Osc 1 is BasicWaves with Morph at 50 (pure sawtooth): the Morph knob runs from a square (0) through a sawtooth (50) to a double sawtooth an octave up (100), Sym only changes the pulse width below 50, and Sub adds a sine an octave down (0 here). Osc 2 is the FM/RM engine (Osc 2 only): Osc 1 modulates it; Wave is Osc 2's waveform, Timbre the FM amount and Shape the ring-mod amount. For ring modulation set RingMod high and FreqMod to 0. M1 (Touch Strip) rides Osc 2's tuning live so the sideband spacing keeps moving — the alien-wobble. Macros: M1: OSC 2 TUNE/OCT — Macros M1/M2 touch strip, live interval sweep. Values are on MiniFreak's native 0-100 scale.

No literal ring modulator and no macro system, but TUNE 2 is a direct physical knob — sweeping it by hand through the FRONT PANEL's clock-position range while a note rings out gives a genuinely hands-on version of the same wobbling interval-sweep effect the other synths achieve via a modulator or macro.

MOD MATRIX
- SOURCE: LFO 3
- DESTINATION: Osc 2 Pitch

Macros
- Macro 1: Osc 2 Pitch (small depth; or target the Mod Matrix route's Depth slot instead)
Real, literal ring modulation via RING VOL, with a free-assign LFO routed through the Mod Matrix to Osc 2 Pitch at a small depth (6, on a -128 to +128 scale) so the ring product sweeps continuously without leaving the neighbourhood of the tuning.
How the synths compare
Digitone II (WAVETONE MOD RING MOD), Syntakt, Novation Summit, Arturia MiniFreak, and ASM Hydrasynth Desktop all have literal ring modulation and add a real, moving interval on top (an LFO route, a live macro, or a Touch Strip). Dreadbox Typhon has neither ring-mod nor a macro, so its version requires manually riding the TUNE 2 knob by hand.
