Snappy Envelope Bass

Sounds like: A tight, punchy bass with a quick thwack on each note.

Sound type: bass · Genre: House, Funk / Soul, Disco · Style: tight, percussive envelope-driven bass programming

A short, punchy bass shaped almost entirely by its amp and filter envelopes rather than filter cutoff or oscillator choice — near-instant attack, a fast decay straight to little or no sustain, and a filter envelope that snaps shut almost immediately, giving each note a percussive 'thwack' independent of pitch.

AMP page

The entire character comes from the FLTR page's own envelope: DEC 15 and SUS 0 snap the cutoff shut almost instantly after each hit, and ENV 90 makes that snap dramatic. AMP's short DEC, low SUS, and short REL keep the amplitude equally tight. Don't slow FLTR's DEC or the percussive 'thwack' turns into a plain filter sweep. ALGO 1 routes operator A (and B) into carrier C, so LEV (A) and LEV (B) are set to 0 on SYN page 2 and MIX is -64 (the X output, C only): that leaves C a plain, unmodulated carrier.

AMP PAGE 2's MODE should be AHD here, not ADSR (SY machines default to ADSR, so set it) — a short DEC with no meaningful sustain phase is exactly what AHD gives for free, and switching to ADSR just adds a redundant sustain stage this patch doesn't want.

AMP ENVELOPE

MODULATION MATRIX

Filter's SOURCE is routed to Mod Env 1, not the Amp Env, so the filter snap is tuned completely independently of the amp shape — one of Summit's real advantages here, since it has genuinely separate dedicated envelopes rather than one envelope doing double duty. Live control: the Mod Wheel lengthens the Mod Env 1 decay through Mod Matrix slot 1; ride the panel Env Depth knob by hand.

ENVELOPE

Osc 1 is BasicWaves with Morph at 50 (pure sawtooth): the Morph knob runs from a square (0) through a sawtooth (50) to a double sawtooth an octave up (100), Sym only changes the pulse width below 50, and Sub adds a sine an octave down (0 here). Values are on MiniFreak's native 0-100 scale.

FILTER ADSR

AMP ADSR

FILTER TIME and AMP TIME on the front panel both pushed fast so the ADSR page values above actually play back quickly rather than being scaled down — on Typhon a fast ADSR setting and a fast TIME knob both matter, one scales the other, so check both if the snap feels sluggish.

FILTER 1

ENVELOPE 1

ENVELOPE 2

Compared with other synths: Envelope 1 and 2 are real, independently pre-wired to Filter 1 and Amp respectively — like Summit, the filter snap and amp punch are tuned completely separately here, both as genuine millisecond values rather than an abstracted 0-127 scale.

How the synths compare

Digitone II, Syntakt, Novation Summit, and ASM Hydrasynth Desktop all give the filter envelope's own decay/sustain a real, separately-tunable role from the amp envelope — the cleanest realizations. MiniFreak and Dreadbox Typhon couple filter and amp shaping more tightly (one envelope driving both, or a TIME knob scaling the detailed ADSR page), which works fine here since this patch wants the same tight shape everywhere anyway.
