Wide Analog Drift Pad

Sounds like: A slow, wide, gently drifting analog pad that feels alive.

Sound type: pad · Genre: Ambient, Trip-Hop · Style: slow-evolving analog pad textures

A slow-blooming, detuned pad that drifts in pitch and timbre over its sustain — should feel like it's slightly alive rather than static, without ever becoming distracting.

ALGO 3 has A modulating all three of C, B2 and B1; with LEV (A) and LEV (B) at 0 they are three plain carriers, and MIX -64 (fully X) selects C + B2, so DTUN — which offsets the ratio of operators A and B2 — genuinely detunes B2 against C for body and width (this is the one algorithm where DTUN does that; in ALGO 1/2/4 it does not). Digitone II's FM TONE machine has no pitch destination for its LFOs, so the 'drift' is MOD page 1 slowly modulating DTUN itself — the beating between the two carriers wanders over time, which is what analog-oscillator drift sounds like — plus MOD page 2's slow Sine on FILTER: Frequency for the timbral breathe. HARM is set negative because negative HARM changes operator C's waveform (positive HARM affects A/B1, which aren't heard here). Digitone II also can't give B1 a different ratio from B2 (RATIO B is shared); for a true independent sub layer, use a second track an octave down.

Three tracks cover body (A), width (B, TUNE nudged a few cents against A), and sub (C, triangle waveforms an octave down at low LEV2) -- Syntakt's per-track filter/amp envelopes and LFOs aren't shared across tracks, so set Track B and Track C's FLTR PAGE 1, AMP PAGE 1/2, and LFO PAGE 1 identically to Track A's settings above unless you specifically want them to diverge. Track A carries the one intended LFO (slow Triangle on PITCH, low depth) for the drift -- don't duplicate it on B and C or the drift becomes too strong in aggregate. Corrected: this LFO used to target an invented 'Pitch' destination — Syntakt's LFO destination list (manual Appendix C) has no direct pitch option, so it now targets the machine's own TUNE knob (parameter 1), the real route to pitch modulation. (For hard one-shot pitch falls Syntakt also has native sweeps: BD MODERN's SWEP sets pitch-sweep depth and time.)

EFFECTS

One layer's three real oscillators cover body (OSC 1), width (OSC 2, detuned a few cents), and sub (OSC 3, one octave down via RANGE 16') simultaneously -- since Summit has three real oscillators per layer, a second layer isn't needed here. LFO 1's destination is hardwired to filter cutoff via FILTER's own LFO 1 DEPTH knob (the gentle timbral breathe); LFO 2's destination is hardwired to oscillator pitch via its own section's Depth knob (the drift) -- neither needs the Mod Matrix, which is reserved here for the Aftertouch routing instead. Live control: the Mod Wheel drives LFO 2 rate, filter frequency and a small Osc 2 pitch offset through three Mod Matrix slots, one control for drift, air and width.

MODULATION MATRIX

Osc 1 is SuperWave, the stacked-detuned-copies engine: Detune (35) sets the spread between the copies and the third knob (60) sets the copies' level against the original. Osc 2 is SuperWave used as a clean sine: Detune and the copies' volume are both 0, so it is a single sine wave. LFO 1 runs a Tri wave at 0.1 Hz. LFO 2 runs a Tri wave at 0.05 Hz. Mod Matrix: the LFO 1 row to the Pitch 1+2 column at +4. Mod Matrix: the LFO 2 row to the Cutoff column at +15. Its 3 independent Digital Effects slots also allow Chorus, Delay, and Reverb to all run at once, matching the full effects chain used elsewhere in this patch. Values are on MiniFreak's native 0-100 scale.

Typhon's maximum envelope times are shorter than the other five synths, so expect a noticeably less dramatic bloom even at the longest FILTER TIME/AMP TIME settings -- a hardware ceiling, not a settings mistake. TUNE 2 here prioritizes a few-cents width detune over an octave-down sub, since Typhon's 2 VCOs can't cover both roles at once -- swap TUNE 2 to an octave down instead if sub weight matters more than width for a given use. Typhon does have real onboard effects: FX2's Ensemble (a polyphonic chorus, wider than plain Chorus) and FX3's Large Reverb, both pushed generously, cover the width/space this patch wants without needing an external send.

Macros

Hydrasynth's per-oscillator layering means, unlike a single-oscillator instrument, it can voice the width layer (OSC 1 + Mutator 1's real WavStack unison mode) and the sub layer (OSC 2, an octave down) at the same time without a tradeoff. ENVELOPE 1 is pre-wired to Filter 1 and ENVELOPE 2 to Amp; LFO 1 is pre-wired to Filter 1 (the timbral breathe) and the free-assign LFO 3 is routed via the Mod Matrix to pitch (the drift). The four Macros here are real Macro knob/button assignments -- distinct from the Mutator modules, which are a separate oscillator-shaping layer.

How the synths compare

Every synth here can realize the slow-bloom envelope character; the main differentiator is whether width (detune/unison) and a separate sub layer can be voiced simultaneously — Summit, Hydrasynth, and MiniFreak (two real oscillators) can, Digitone II can with the right algorithm, and Typhon requires a tradeoff, called out in its notes above.
